The Food and Drug Administration is seriously considering whether to approve the first genetically engineered animal that people would eat — salmon that can grow at twice the normal rate.

Turtle Deaths Called Result of Shrimping, Not Oil Spill
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist says he believes most of the dead turtles that have been examined since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill died not from the oil or the chemical dispersants put into the water after the disaster, but from being caught in shrimping nets, though further testing may show otherwise.

Two New Toxins
This year officials found a different species of algae, called aphanizomenon gracile, that can produce different toxinsat Grand Lake St. Marys. Water tests the state reported late Friday, found a liver toxin called cylindrospermopsin, and nervous system damaging saxitoxin in the water near the lake’s West Beach.

State kept unaware of environmental dangers at casino site
Delphi spent about a year identifying toxins at the West Side manufacturing plant it closed in 2007 but never told the state about what it found. It wasn’t required to. New owner Penn National Gaming has shared Delphi’s 3,000-page report with the EPA and plans to clean up the site before opening a casino in 2012.

Sewer fix increased pollution for months
Columbus missed a court-ordered October construction deadline and faced as much as $247,500 in fines from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The agency’s records show that the city’s Southerly plant released nearly three times the amount of untreated sewage into the river this year compared with 2009.

All options considered to be ready for electric vehicle plug-ins
Smart Plug, a start-up based at Ohio State University’s Center for Automotive Research, plans to install six charging stations this fall and is talking with state and local officials about applying for $10 million to $15 million in federal stimulus money, enough to place hundreds of charging stations throughout Ohio and study how they’re used.
